Sembrong Dam was completed in 1984 and formed part of the Western Johore Integrated Agricultural Development Project in the State of Johor. It is located about 10km from Air Hitam town in the state of Johor on the Air Hitam - Kluang road. The dam was primarily for flood mitigation but the stored water (up to RL8.5m) is tapped by Syarikat Air Johor for water supply. Currently, they are abstracting approximately 2Mld directly from the dam for domestic water demand.
The dam is drained by Sg. Sembrong and has a catchment area of about 130sq.km. From the storage capacity, about 18Mcm is for water supply and 34Mcm for flood buffer (between RL8.5m to RL12m). The dam provides downstream flood protection up to 100-years return period with a maximum release of 42 cumecs.
The dam comprises three main and four saddle dam embankments, a gated flood regulating outlet and an ungated ogee spillway. Both the outlet and ungated ogee spillway share a stilling basin and outlet channel.
